The 10 Things You’re Doing That Attracts Pests

While we all hope to be living a clean and tidy lifestyle – whether that’s at home or the way you run your business – there are some things you may be doing that unintentionally attract pests to your property.

Pest control is always a great way to deal with any pest issues that arise, but here at Pest Defence, we always say that prevention is often simpler than the cure. That’s why, this month, we’re going to highlight ten things people commonly do without realising it could attract pests, with the hope that by pointing these things out you can combat the risk.

Things that you're doing that attracts pests at home like ants

How many of the following are you guilty of letting slide?

  • Leaving food out – Starting with something that should be obvious but which people overlook. If you leave food out or store it in open containers, you’re giving pests an invitation to a free meal, and once they’re in, they’re hard to get out.
  • Not closing lids on bins – Whether it’s indoor or outdoor bins, leaving the lid open or not firmly closed is yet another offer of food for cockroaches and rodents.
  • Not cleaning your bins – Many people keep their bin lids closed but still neglect to clean the inside of the bin regularly. This, again, applies to your indoor and outdoor bins, as liquid and food scraps may find their way into the bin itself, creating a sticky mess that will not only attract insects but also other hungry pests.
  • Ignoring holes and cracks in your property – Keeping on top of routine maintenance and repairs when you see a crack or hole in your building means preventing easy access inside for mice, rats and even bats who are seeking shelter.
  • Cluttering the cupboard under the sink – Many people keep cleaning products, bin bags and assorted items under the sink, but too much clutter can present a nesting opportunity for insects, especially cockroaches who will enjoy the warmth and dark.
  • Propping open doors – Keeping doors propped open from the inside to the outside, especially for business premises, is common, but it’s literally an open invitation for a range of pests, especially pigeons, insects and rodents.
  • Not having drains professionally cleaned – Because they’re underground you may be forgiven for forgetting about your drains. But since they’re a key travel route for dirt, food and waste, they will attract pests if you don’t have them professionally cleaned every so often – especially if you operate in hospitality with multiple drains and sinks on site.
  • Leaving dirty dishes overnight – Sometimes you forget, other times you can’t be bothered, but leaving dirty dishes to pile up in or beside the sink will attract pests because of leftovers and food waste.
  • Bright lights, open windows – During the summer months it stands to reason that you’ll have your windows open more into the evening and at night, but if your lights are on you’re turning your home into a beacon for insects such as moths. Opt for dimmer, warmer lighting where you can to limit the influx of bugs when it gets dark.
  • Ignoring signs of pests – If you see signs of pests, the worst thing to do is ignore them. Whether you adjust your behaviour – closing bins, filling in cracks, disposing of waste properly – or you call in the professionals, anything is better than ignoring the problem — it only gets worse if you don’t act!
